Osteopathy is a science, a philosophy, and a practice that focuses on facilitating the health of joints and muscles through non-invasive manual therapy, helping to strengthen the framework of the body. Osteopathy utilizes a patient centred approach. Meaning no two individuals are the same and your treatment plan will be unique.
Osteopathy was introduced by founder Dr. A.T. Still in the 1870's and has grown exponentially in popularity through its success with patients of all ages and backgrounds.
Your first appointment generally lasts about an hour to allow the Osteopathic Practitioner adequate time to:
Ask questions and learn about your concern(s), general health, other medical care you are receiving or medication you are taking, and record this in your case notes. The information you provide will be confidential as per the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
During the assessment process you will be asked to perform simple movements and stretches to observe your posture and mobility. Because of the body’s structure, pain or stiffness you are experiencing in one part may be linked to a problem elsewhere. The Osteopathic Practitioner will passively move your body to assess the health of the joints, tissues and ligaments using their hands and a highly developed sense of touch called palpation.
Your Osteopathic Practitioner will also check for signs of serious conditions they cannot treat and may advise you to see your GP or the hospital.
Simplest answer is, it depends. Again, Osteopathy utilizes a patient centred approach and the time for your body to heal is dependent upon multiple factors such as nutrition, daily tasks, sleep, stress, current physical condition etc. Because of the physical nature of the treatment, it is not unusual to sometimes feel sore in the first 24-48 hours after treatment. Your Osteopathic Practitioner will explain any likely reactions that you could expect. If you have any concerns it is important to contact the Osteopathic Practitioner and ask their advice. It may require more than one visit before your problem is resolved. The Osteopathic Practitioner will review your progress at each subsequent visit and seek your consent to any changes to your treatment plan.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, as treatment involves movement of all joints and through different ranges of motion. If you need to change clothes, there are bathrooms available for use prior to your appointment so that time isn’t taken away from your appointment.
